Field Conditions at LHS Can Improve

New changes have been happening all this year, and one of the many is the LHS soccer team playing on a new field. You may remember that the soccer team used to play out at the Lewis and Young Park. Now they have moved to what was the old practice field.

This move was motivated by poor field conditions at Lewis and Young. Conditions were deemed unsafe and unfit for play.

“It was bumpy and hard to play on. The drive out there even made it worse,” Dylan York, senior, said. “The new field is better in comparison, but it still has issues.”

Several issues include no lights on the field and the fields are not easily accessible.

“No lights force the varsity to be first. My grandparents also struggle to make the game because they struggle to get out to the field,” York said.

Poor field conditions seem to be a common theme throughout LHS sports. The football team and baseball team appear to have similar issues. For several years now, the football team has seen their field struggle to maintain quality into postseason play. The baseball team plays out at Lewis and Young, which sees many of its own issues play a role in field quality for our baseball team.

“The field is actually pretty nice right now, but when we start playing in the playoffs the grass is half gone. In the middle it’s just a mud pit,” Clark Gregory, senior, said.

Not all hope is lost for the field quality. With an outstanding support staff for our school, this should not be an issue. There are easy steps that could be taken to prevent these issues. It’s not a difficult fix for a great school like ours.

“There are a number of factors that go into raising high quality grass. Kansas weather is a huge challenge but it can be done with proper grass growing techniques,” Jim Morgan, head of the LHS Ag department, said. “Obviously proper watering, and that includes not over watering, proper fertilization, and core aerating all play a role.”

Growing good fields can be done in Kansas. Louisburg could do the exact same thing. Moving the soccer field was a step forward for our schools athletic field problems. It may have been one step, but it may be time to run. In a great school like ours, this shouldn’t be an issue.
